Since, the pandemic has start, the government is making sure to introduce every possible way to make things normal the new normal way, various policies and rules has already introduced by government towards this initiative.

One such new policy has been introduced by the government, The SCRAPPAGE POLICY, to ensure the emission control happen because of the old generation engines in our vehicles, and to control pollution that is increasing day by day.

Scrappage policy

Under this policy, the government proposed that, the vehicles used by the government and the PSUs (Public sector undertakings), will be scrapped out if older than 15 years or more. As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways This policy comes in action from Apr 1,2022.

This comes in light because the 15 years old vehicle use old machines, IC Engines, that didn’t have good emission control system, and increases pollution, if we scrappe those old vehicles and exchange them with new eco-friendly electric vehicles that equipped well according to new norms, more likely there’s chances of controlling pollution till some extent.

For the private vehicles, the policy is right now on voluntary basis, means they have to undergo a fitness test for the vehicle at government vehicle centre, and in case of failing, their vehicles get scrapped.

Government plan to use GREEN TAX revenue, in order to manage and reduce the pollution and for a better cause.

What is “GREEN TAX”?

When you go for a registration certificate of your respective vehicle after 15 years, you have to pay certain amount under “GREEN TAX” for the renewal of your registration certificate.

This has some division as per no. of years you own your vehicle:

For 15 years old vehicle As higher as 50% of road tax
Older than 8 years Tax=10-25% of road tax
City bus or public transport Low tax around 2-5%
Electric vehicle Exempted from green tax

  •  So now what is road tax?

Also called Motor Vehicle Tax, the tax owner of a vehicle has to pay to be eligibly allowed to drive on a public roads, is called the road tax.

Advantages

  • According to CSE (Centre for Science and Environment), till end 2025, there’s approx. 2 crores vehicles that lost their identity towards a good cause. The basic purpose for implementing this Scrappage policy is reducing emission and make environment pollution free improving the quality of air by accepting the newly developed electric vehicle.
  • Improve road safety with new policies
  • Reduce oil importing

Conclusion

I totally favour this policy, this help us in many ways from road safety to traffic measures, to less oil to less sound and further less pollution.
