New Covid Strains – According to the recently aired news, the possibility of new COVID strains emerging in the country. This came to light after the sudden spike in a number of positive cases in some districts of Maharashtra and Kerala and in some parts of Telangana.

There’s a total of 75% active cases recorded due to COVID-19 in Kerala and Maharashtra. Out of which 38% total active cases in Kerala and 37% total cases in Maharashtra have been noted. Karnataka has 4% and Tamil Nadu has 2.78%.

New strains “N440K” and “E484K” :

The new strain cases initially reported in the United Kingdom. Came under scanner after the spikes in Covid-19 cases in some states including Maharashtra, Kerala, and Telangana. According to AIIMS Dr. Randeep Guleria, 240 more new strains have emerged across India. He added the reason for the high infection rate was down due to the ability to evade antibodies known as the ” Immune Escape Mechanism”.

This also means even after getting vaccinated, there are chances of one still come under the influence of infection, because the newly emerged mutants are more infectious and dangerous.

These 2 emerged strains detected in labs of Indian SARS-Cov-2 Genomic Consortia (INSACOG), who is continuously tracing the virus since it emerges in the United Kingdom.

E484K: Commonly termed as escape mutation as it helps virus slip past the body’s immune system.

N440K: associated with greater binding affinity with human receptors and linked with faster transmission capability.

And out of all 10, 6 found positive samples for the new emerging variants. The confirmation for the UK strain has reported by Denmark, Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, France, Canada and Japan, Singapore already. In India also there is a rise in cases in some states after this came out. Although there’s a decline still the chances of the deadliest virus didn’t slow down. And with the sudden surge in cases after these new variants showed up, new cases emerge of a total of 80 people infected.

What are experts saying?

• All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) doctor Randeep Guleria, confirmed the news of new strains emerging in the country. He further added these 2 are more infectious and dangerous than the original Coronavirus.
• Niti Aayog member VK Paul confirmed the new strains are available. He also said 3 other strains- one from United Kingdom, South Africa, and Brazil already present in country. But based on some scientific information we can’t conclude the sudden rise in Covid patients in Maharashtra and Kerala is due to this only.
• Director of PGIMER Chandigarh said both Indian and UK variant is transmissible. He also advised people to take the situations seriously and strictly follow the guidelines for the novel Coronavirus.

What Health Ministry says:

New Covid Strains – According to the Ministry of Health, a total of 13,742 new cases reported in last 24 hour. And among all Maharashtra report maximum changes with 298 active cases. Kerala and Maharashtra reported more than 4,000 average daily new cases in the past weeks.

Who is responsible for all this? Though the vaccine is in process for the virus but its still a mystery till when everyone will get vaccinated and if there’s a guarantee that after getting the vaccine, there should not be any further problem.
